Backing Victoria’s Brightest Maths Students

VIC Premier

Victoria is the Education State – that means backing high-ability students to go as far as their talent can take them.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll today announced the first Victorian Maths Camp is underway these school holidays.

The first of four camps planned for 2026 is being held over five days at Lake Dewar Discovery Camp in Myrniong.

Thirty-two high-ability Year 10 government school students are taking part.

Students work with maths specialists and industry experts to solve real-world problems – and discover where a passion for maths can take them.

Camps will also be held at Glenmore, Falls Creek and Mt Eliza later this year.

Across 2026 to 2028, close to 1,000 high-ability Year 9 and 10 students from government schools across Victoria are expected to take part.

The Labor Government has partnered with the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) at the University of Melbourne and the Mathematical Association of Victoria to deliver the camps.

Victorian Maths Camps are part of Labor’s $46.6 million Excellence in Mathematics Education investment – prioritising programs that lift mathematics and numeracy standards in Victorian schools.

The investment also supports the Mathematics Position Statement launched last year by Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll.

This year, new mandatory Grade 1 numeracy checks have been introduced to identify students at risk of falling behind – and those who are excelling.

Four Mathematics Ambassadors have also been recruited to support parent and carer engagement with mathematics – nurturing a love of maths in the next generation.

More than 315,000 students have benefited from Labor’s $230.5 million investment in the Student Excellence Program since 2020.

Only Labor backs every student – no matter their postcode or background.
