The sale of 9a Bareena Street will support future housing outcomes in Port Stephens, with proceeds reinvested into roads across the region.
Following the closure of the road reserve, Port Stephens Council sold operational land at 9a Bareena Street to Hume Housing. Hume will now assess local housing needs and explore how the site can best contribute to positive housing outcomes for the community, while Council reinvests the proceeds of the sale into its road network.
The sale comes as Council continues to respond to housing challenges across Port Stephens, where rising housing costs are making it harder for some residents to find a safe, secure and suitable place to live.
Mayor Leah Anderson said a safe and secure place to call home is important for everyone and is becoming harder for some people in our community.
“Supporting affordable housing is one way we can help address local housing needs, and reinvesting the proceeds into our roads means the sale will also help fund important infrastructure for our community,” Mayor Anderson said.
“Raymond Terrace is the perfect place for more housing because of its central location.
“We’re focusing on more diverse homes in town centres like Raymond Terrace so people can live close to shops, services, and public transport,” Mayor Anderson added.
The sale also aligns with Council’s broader focus on housing through its draft Affordable Housing Action Plan, which is currently on public exhibition. The draft plan outlines Council’s role in facilitating and supporting affordable housing outcomes, with 20 actions across 3 priority areas: Advocacy, Planning and Partnerships.
The draft plan focuses on delivering more homes through strong partnerships with organisation such as Hume Housing to unlock more homes quickly, create local jobs, and ensure affordable homes for more people in Port Stephens.
Hume Housing will deliver the development at 9a Bareena Street. Brad Braithwaite, CEO Hume Housing, said this site will help support positive housing outcomes for the community.
“We’re thrilled to have secured this site and grateful to Port Stephens Council for working with us to make it happen. While we’re still considering the best future use of the land, we know that opportunities like this are increasingly rare and play an important role in helping community housing providers respond to growing housing demand,” Brad Braithwaite said.
Housing affordability and availability continue to be significant challenges for many people, and we’re committed to exploring how this site can support positive housing outcomes for the community in the years ahead,” Brad Braithwaite added.
The community is encouraged to view the draft Affordable Housing Action Plan and provide feedback during the public exhibition period, which closes at 5pm on Wednesday 4 November 2026.
