Barkly Regional Deal – Design Tender Released for the Tennant Creek Visitor Park

5 August 2022

A design tender has been released for the Tennant Creek Visitor Park, a lighthouse project within the Barkly Regional Deal (BRD).

The Visitor Park responds to the need for more short-term, alternative and affordable accommodation for people travelling to Tennant Creek for cultural, health or social reasons.

Once constructed, the Visitor Park will provide safe, secure and alcohol free accommodation for visitors to Tennant Creek from remote aboriginal communities and ouststations.

Located on the corner of Leichhardt Street and Udall Road, the Visitor Park will comprise of different types of accommodation including open, grassed camping areas and large covered shelters for swags and cabins. The design phase will investigate the appropriate accommodation mix to meet the estimated demand throughout the year and possible future expansion of the facility.

The design and construction phase is being funded by the Australian Government with all ongoing operational funding provided by the Northern Territory Government.

Quotes attributed to the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Natasha Fyles:

“The Barkly Regional Deal aims to improve the productivity and liveability of the Barkly region by stimulating economic growth and improving social outcomes, including reducing overcrowding and improving child safety.

“The design phase for the Tennant Creek Visitor Park will involve continued engagement with the BRD working group, and consultation with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal language groups across the region and the local community.”

Quotes attributed to the Minister for Housing and Homelands, Selena Uibo:

“The Barkly Regional Deal is the first regional deal in Australia-a 10 year $84.7 million commitment between the Australian Government, the Northern Territory Government and Barkly Regional Council to improve the productivity and liveability of the Barkly region by stimulating economic growth, improving social outcomes and supporting local Aboriginal leadership.

“Work to get to this stage has been guided by the BRD Visitor Park Working Group, who selected the site, set the design principles and have begun developing the service delivery elements.”
