Bayside Council is celebrating a decade of serving the community following the creation of the new local government area in September 2016.
The amalgamation of Rockdale City Council and City of Botany Bay Council was officially proclaimed on 9 September 2016, following a decision by the then Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole.
The formation of Bayside brought together diverse communities stretching from the Georges River to Botany Bay. While the amalgamation combined two councils into one organisation, the greater challenge was fostering a shared sense of belonging while preserving and celebrating the unique character, history and pride of each suburb.
During its first year, Bayside Council was led by Administrator Greg Wright and General Manager Meredith Wallace. The first elections for the new council were held on 9 September 2017, marking an important milestone in the establishment of local democratic representation.
Over the past decade, Bayside has evolved into a vibrant and connected area.
Council has delivered new parks and community spaces, upgraded sporting facilities, completed major infrastructure projects and continued to support local businesses.
Among the many achievements of the past 10 years are the opening of the Eastgardens Library and Customer Service Centre in 2017, the development of Mutch Park Skate Park, the Arncliffe Youth Centre, the adventure playground at Sir Joseph Banks Park and the transformation of Barton Park into a thriving recreational hub.
These projects have helped create more opportunities for residents to connect, play, learn and enjoy the city’s public spaces.
Bayside’s success has also been shaped by the dedication and contribution of residents, volunteers, community groups and local businesses. Together, they have helped build a strong and inclusive community that celebrates its rich cultural diversity, cares for the environment and continues to find new ways to connect and thrive.
As Bayside marks its first decade, the city looks ahead with confidence, building on its achievements while continuing to create opportunities for future generations.
