Bayside Gallery re-opens 18 June

We’re so happy to re-open Bayside Gallery on Friday 18 June. There’s two weeks left to see Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize winners and finalists such as Noni Drew, a local Bayside artist:

Noni Drew

Local artist, Noni Drew is described as an ‘aesthetic appreciator and colour collector’ which is no surprise when you look at her whimsical artwork titled ‘I Like That’ at the 2020/21 Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize.

‘I Like That’ is an ongoing series of small acrylic works drawn from images shared by former teachers and fellow artists on Instagram.

According to Drew, ‘Instagram has changed the way we view and consume art. On the one hand it democratises art, however, when culture is fed through the social media machine it becomes flatter and much less interesting. Viewing art through the lens of Instagram transforms the work of art into a documented object.’

Drew subverts the fast and disposable nature of social media images by laboriously reproducing the images in paint.

Drew spent her formative years in Hampton, attending Firbank Grammar, and after a decade of living overseas she has returned to Bayside to raise her family. We are delighted to have her as part of the 2020/21 Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize.
