Bayside’s climate battle wins award

Council’s commitment to tackling climate change has been recognised nationally.

Bayside has won the 2021 National Federation Award for Environmental Leadership and Sustainability.

Hosted by Local Government Professionals Australia, The National Federation Awards showcase innovative solutions, and the delivery of quality services and better outcomes among Australia’s 537 local Councils.

Bayside City Council chief executive Mick Cummins said he was proud of the work of Council’s sustainability team, which was supported and backed up by the entire organisation and councillors.

“Bayside has been tackling climate change for a number of years, including installing solar panels on Council buildings, introducing food and organics waste recycling and establishing a low-emission vehicle fleet,” Mr Cummins said.

“Council has also recently established a whole of municipality community emissions reduction target and will continue to look at all opportunities to further reduce emissions.

Local Government Professionals Australia Chief Executive Officer Catherine Carter congratulated Bayside City Council for its sector-leading commitment to carbon neutrality.

The celebration of excellence was presented during a livestreamed event on the Local Government Professionals Australia YouTube channel on 30 November.
