More than 2,500m³ of sand will be used to restore the beach on The Strand next week as part of erosion mitigation works.
The foreshore will be closed between Longboard and the Sailing Club from 12 October until the end of the month so Townsville City Council can redistribute sand that has accumulated further down the beach.
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Chair Margie Ryder said this project would help restore the areas of The Strand most susceptible to erosion.
“This project will help restore the Gregory Street headland in front of Longboard using sand that has accumulated in front of the Sailing Club,” Cr Ryder said.
“Council wants this job finished before turtle nesting season begins in November because this has been a known nesting site before, and we don’t want to do anything that would negatively impact that.
“This project, like others we’ve completed at Rowes Bay, Horseshoe Bay and Cungulla, will mitigate the impact of coastal erosion and improve resilience of the beach ahead of the upcoming wet season.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said it was important this work is done before the beginning of the wet season and the summer heat kicks in.
“The Strand foreshore is a very popular destination and Council wants to get this work completed before it starts to get too busy on the beaches,” Cr Greaney said.
“This is a crucial project that not only improves resilience of the beach, it also supports nesting turtles and allows residents and tourists to enjoy the beautiful location.
“This project is expected to take no more than two weeks to complete – weather permitting – and I’d like to thank the community for their patience while the beach is closed.”
