Bee Management At Verge Street Sports Fields

Kempsey Shire Council

Kempsey Shire Council has identified a hive made by bees under a shipping container at the Verge Street sports fields.

The bees have nested below the main door to the container that the Macleay Netball Association use to store their equipment.

Unfortunately this presents a risk to both club members and passers by.

On Thursday, Council engaged a professional apiarist to inspect the site in the hope of relocating the bees. The apiarist dug under the container and discovered a large swarm. He removed the honeycomb and conducted a thorough inspection however he could not locate the queen bee.

A bee box containing the honeycomb was placed next to the container overnight, in an effort to lure the bees to relocate. Unfortunately this was not successful and the bees remain under the container.

Under advice from the apiarist, Council are making steps to eradicate the remaining bees in the interests of public safety.

Staff will work with a professional pest control company to eradicate the bees at 7am on Saturday.

In the meantime signage is in place and the community are asked to exercise caution.
