Behaviour Support and Restrictive Practices transitional arrangements announced

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has released information
outlining changes to the regulation of behaviour support and restrictive
practices in Victoria. Detailed information regarding Victoria’s authorisation
process for the use of regulated restrictive practices has also been released, which includes interim Restrictive Intervention Data Set (RIDS) processes
whilst the RIDS is being upgraded to create a specific authorisation pathway. These factsheets, along with other relevant information, have been uploaded to
the Victorian Government’s NDIS Quality and Safeguards webpage.Registered providers of specialist behaviour support should also be aware that
the National Disability Insurance Scheme (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour
Support) Rules 2018 require that they use a behaviour support practitioner that the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commissioner considers suitable. To comply with this requirement, specialist behaviour support providers must
notify the NDIS Commission of their behaviour support practitioners. For
providers in Victoria – who are commencing from 1 July 2019 under the NDIS
Commission – this notification must be made by 31 July 2019.The notification can be made by accessing the Notification of Behaviour Support Practitioners (s29) online form. The NDIS Commission will consider the information provided and advise NDIS
behaviour support practitioners in writing if they have been deemed
provisionally suitable. This provisional status will remain in place until the practitioner undergoes
an assessment against the Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework. The NDIS Commission has commenced operation in Victoria, and the behaviour
support team is available to respond to queries relating to behaviour support
and restrictive practices. The team can be contacted via email on emailProtector.addCloakedMailto(“ep_576edaed”, 1);,
