The inaugural Ellen José Art Award for young women is in its final weeks at Bayside Gallery.
We caught up with Dr Joseph Toscano, husband of the late Ellen José, to gain an insight into Ellen’s life as a pioneering indigenous artist, radical activist, and social justice campaigner, and what inspired the formation of this significant award.
“The family felt that it was appropriate that we did something in order to honour her legacy. But more importantly, to assist up and coming young female artists,” Toscano said.
In this video you will also hear from our six finalists, Moorina Bonini, Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson, Hannah Gartside, Nadia Hernández, Annika Romeyn and Emma Singer, who discuss their art practise and what the award means to them.
“I don’t usually apply for award[s]…but something drew me into this one, and I think it was her, because I think I really saw myself in her work and I really connected to her that way,” Bonini said.
The Ellen José Art Award for young women is on display until 28 August.
