Gerringong is another step closer to getting its own bank branch once more, with the adoption of a heritage impact statement for the local town hall.
Bendigo Bank has lodged a development application to use Gerringong Town Hall, owned by Kiama Council.
However, a heritage management statement is necessary before Council can consider leasing Bendigo Bank the ground floor of the historic building.
Gerringong Town Hall is cited as a good example of an inter-war public building, built in a Classical Revival Style. It is also important historically as the town hall for the short-lived Municipality of Gerringong (1871 – 1954).
The heritage impact statement lists the alterations proposed by the bank, including installing a security door and other fit-out works as well as a false ceiling to protect the original and hide air-conditioning ducts.
The statement describes the proposed changes as minor that will not affect the heritage the site.
