Berwick Building Blocks – Creative workshops for kids

Vic Department of Transport

Over 150 children took part in last week’s inaugural Berwick Building Blocks workshop, which saw them replicate level crossing removals with foam blocks.

Spanning 6 sessions running each day from Monday 6 December to Friday 10 December, the 4 activity stations focused on planning and safety, environment, construction and the building blocks.

Dressed in high-vis vests and hard hats, kids were free to participate in the following activities:

  • rock planters where kids could plant their own seeds to take home and watch them grow
  • building blocks that replicated the Clyde Road level crossing design for a road underpass
  • a children’s digger
  • an activity and sticker book which focused on design, safety and environment
  • cardboard models to create trucks, loaders and trains
  • a train photo booth.

During these activities, the kids and their parents were free to ask the staff questions about the new road underpass and landscaping coming to Clyde Road.

‘All construction projects should do something like this. It awakens something in the children and lets them see a possible future. And we learn about the project too,’ one parent said.

Each child was given a gift bag to take home, while some of the children enjoyed the free sessions so much that they booked in for the following day.

If you missed out on the December sessions, there will be more running from Wednesday January 5 to Friday 7 January 2022.
