‘Beyonce’ joins Waverley Private Hospital team

Waverley Private Hospital has delivered its first robot surgeries

There’s a new superstar performer at Melbourne’s Waverley Private Hospital – and the surgical team there is ‘Crazy in Love’ with the results so far.

The hospital has delivered its first robotic surgeries following the arrival of its new da Vinci X technology.

CEO Maree Mendola said the team had affectionately named the robot ‘Beyonce’ after the American singer “because she’s a star!”

This da Vinci model, which features voice and laser guidance for its mounted arms, is based on the more advanced Xi version.

It is described by its maker as “a value-oriented option for hospitals just starting their robotic-assisted surgical program”.

“We’re looking forward to growing our robotics program so that we can continue to provide advanced technology to our patients now and into the future,” Ms Mendola said.

General and colorectal surgeon Kareem Marwan performed the milestone procedures in June 2021: a hernia repair, a cholecystectomy, and a right hemicolectomy.

“I want to congratulate Mr Marwan for completing three procedures on the first robotic list, all without issue and providing great outcomes for the patients,” Ms Mendola said.

“I also want to acknowledge our wonderful perioperative team for their commitment to training and learning about the da Vinci X robot to ensure the procedures are performed safely.”
