The Cook Labor Government is investing more than $900,000 to support the next generation of Western Australian minerals researchers, with applications now open for five 2027 Minerals Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) PhD scholarships.
The scholarships will support research tackling some of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing WA’s resources sector – from safer and more efficient mining to critical minerals, emission reductions and green steel.
Two of the five scholarships will be dedicated to supporting women undertaking minerals research, helping build a more diverse pipeline of highly skilled researchers for the future.
The scholarships available include:
- One MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship
Supporting research into precision and low-impact mining, including technologies that improve safety, efficiency and environmental outcomes.
- Two MRIWA PhD Scholarships
Supporting research into alternative use for mine tailings and waste and net zero emissions mining and green steel.
- Two MRIWA PhD Scholarships for Women
Supporting women-led research targeting across MRIWA’s priority areas, including net zero emissions mining and green steel.
The scholarships provide more than $45,000 per year for up to 3.5 years, a research and travel allowance of more than $6,000 per annum, and access to professional development, training and networking opportunities.
Scholars will also benefit from engagement with industry, universities and the broader research community through the broader MRIWA Education and Workforce Development program.
Applications close on Monday, 2 November 2026.
