BiG Day In to showcase digital careers in 2019

The nationally renowned BiG Day In digital careers conference will be back on the Sunshine Coast to showcase the latest trends in digital and IT careers on Wednesday, March 27 next year.

Aligning with council’s healthy, smart, creative vision for the region, the program’s primary focus will be to inspire and inform secondary school students in years 9-12.

Leading speakers from companies such as IBM, WiseTech Global, Technology One, Adobe, Defence Force Recruitment and Youi Insurance, will share their experience and expertise on the future of technology and how students can get involved in one of the key industries of the future.

Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Stephen Robinson said digital innovation and careers in technology would be a key part of the future workforce.

“The Sunshine Coast is fast becoming the place to be for technology start-ups and entrepreneurs, so it’s important we provide the platform for the next generation of innovators via events like the BiG Day In” Cr Robinson said.

“We’re excited about digital innovation and with the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Submarine Cable landing on the Sunshine Coast by mid-2020, there will be even more career opportunities for young people both in the short and long term as more and more businesses with high data and technology needs set up on the Sunshine Coast.

“Council is extremely pleased to partner with the Australian Computer Society Foundation (ACS) to deliver the BiG Day In on the Sunshine Coast, and we encourage local teachers to get involved and book in their students early.”

ACS Foundation executive director John Ridge AM said the Sunshine Coast’s BiG Day In event formed part of a national series of events that reach more than 6500 students each year.

“Since we started running the BiG Day In seven years ago, more than 30,000 students across Australia have gained a vital industry perspective to a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM),” Mr Ridge said.

“Last year the event sold out early, so it’s important for schools to get in now and book their tickets.

Paul Dionysius, academic leader – Digital Technologies at Siena Catholic College, said it was fantastic to have this digital careers event on the Sunshine Coast.

“To hear from IT professionals who have had success both globally and locally, inspires students and helps them to understand there are real opportunities available,” Mr Dionysius said.

“And the great thing is the opportunities go across all education levels, with support for people with or without tertiary education. There really is something for everyone.

“I’ve seen first-hand the benefit of this event for students, and I would definitely recommend teachers get in early and get their school involved.

“We have already purchased our tickets for 2019. It’s an event not to be missed.”

The BiG Day In will be held at Venue 114, Bokarina.
