Biggest Project in Western Sydney off to a deadly start

Workers engaged in contaminated soil removal have had to stop work at Badgery’s Creek Airport in Western Sydney from Tuesday after workers raised concerns with the CFMEU about asbestos contamination and inadequate dust control measures on the site, affecting 40-50 workers.

Work will not resume until the safety concerns have been completely addressed.

Union organisers arrived to find that soil contaminated with asbestos was being moved around the site, loaded into trucks and transported without adequate protection for those working on the Lend Lease Engineering/CPB Early Earthworks Project worth $80 million.

A professional hygienist was engaged and confirmed the workers’ fears of widespread contamination.

Exposure to asbestos can cause the deadly disease of Mesothelioma and in 2019 it is totally unacceptable and grossly reckless that this Company does not have in place worlds best safety practices.
