Birds in Backyards Winter Survey happening now

Bird lovers and twitchers across the Wimmera are invited to get involved in BirdLife Australia’s Birds in Backyards survey.

The seasonal survey indicates how birds are faring in different landscapes and in varying proximities to humans.

The survey asks participants to sit and have a cup of tea for 10 minutes a day and observe the birds that they can see.

Noting the species of the observed birds is important for the survey, however, notes on particular behaviours is also useful. Behaviours of note may include how different species interact, what flora they are feeding on and whether they are even braving a Winter dip in a birdbath.

People can get involved by visiting the BirdLife Australia website and clicking through to the Birds in Backyards page. There is also a handy survey instruction video on YouTube

Birds in Backyards surveys are held every season and data collected helps conservation organisations, academics, local governments, educators and urban planners improve urban biodiversity, which in turn, helps birds.
