Black Spot funding supports road safety improvements in Concord

The City of Canada Bay is progressing road safety improvements at the intersection of Flavelle Street, Alexandra Street and Gipps Street in Concord, supported by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program funding.

The project addresses community concerns relating to the safety of vehicle turning movements into and out of Flavelle Street and enhances pedestrian access, visibility, and overall intersection safety.

Earlier this year, Council consulted with the community on a proposal to improve safety at this location. The proposal included a pedestrian refuge island to slow vehicles and provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians, as well as a ‘Left Turn Only’ restriction from Flavelle Street into Gipps Street to improve traffic flow.

Feedback from the community has informed a modified proposal for the intersection, which will now be submitted to Transport for NSW for approval ahead of the works.

Enhancements to the original proposal include:

  • Realigning the pedestrian refuge island to encroach onto Gipps Street to further improve sightlines for pedestrians.

  • Relocating the ‘Give Way’ line to align with the pedestrian refuge island.

  • Additional kerb blisters on Gipps Street to encourage motorists turning into and out of Flavelle Street to remain in the appropriate lane.

  • Lighting upgrades to improve visibility for pedestrians and motorists.

Mayor Michael Megna thanked the community for its input into the proposed upgrades.

“We’re fortunate to have an engaged community that takes an active interest in what’s happening across the City of Canada Bay,” he said.

“Residents often have a very good understanding of how an intersection works in practice, and we value the local knowledge they provide. We’re pleased to have been able to take that community experience into account as we refined the proposal, and to have secured Black Spot funding to help deliver the improvements.”
