Body recovered after boat capsizes in Monaro

The body of an elderly man has been recovered after a boat capsized near Cooma today.

About 9.30am (Saturday 8 January 2022), emergency services were called to Braemar Bay – about 60km’s west of Cooma – following reports a small boat had capsized.

Police were told an 87-year-old man had been sighted on the boat, however, had not been seen again after it flipped.

Officers attached to Monaro Police District, with assistance from the Marine Area Command, Police Divers, Marine Rescue, a Westpac helicopter, a TOLL helicopter, State Emergency Service NSW (SES), and Surf Life Saving NSW attended and commenced a large-scale search of the area.

Following an extensive search, the body of an elderly man was located by Police Divers about 4.30pm and taken to Cooma Hospital.

He has been identified as the missing 87-year-old man from Ramsey, Victoria.

A report will now be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

The boat will be salvaged and undergo further examination.
