Book in to have your cats and dogs microchipped for free

Get your furry friends microchipped with a brand new appointment-only free microchipping program for registered dogs and approved cats across Townsville.

Townsville City Council’s Animal Care and Adoption Centre is moving to an appointment-only system next month allowing local four-legged friends and their owners to have the safest microchipping experience possible.

Council Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Margie Ryder said the program had previously been held at dedicated Council events and was designed to encourage responsible pet ownership.

“The free accessible microchipping has been a huge success in the past, giving all pet lovers the chance to save money and time,” Cr Ryder said.

“It’s a great opportunity for all community members to access an easy solution to ensure we can safely return their pets home if they do become lost.”

Cr Ryder said that she was thrilled the program was taking place despite needing a shake-up due to the pandemic.

“I hope that residents get behind the free microchipping as not only does it support responsible pet ownership but also our local animal care facilities,” Cr Ryder said.

“Our pets were here for us as we went through the height of the pandemic, and it’s important that we return the favour by microchipping them, making sure they can safely return home if they are lost.”

Free microchipping appointments will be available once a month at the Townsville Animal Care and Adoption Centre and will kick off on October 21.
