Boost for Gloucester sports facilities

MidCoast Council

It’s kick-off time on projects to install new grandstand seating at Gloucester District Park and a new surface for the district’s netball courts.

While it has been a long wait for the Gloucester community, the grandstand seating for Gloucester District Park is closer to becoming a reality. Seating for 484 people, along with new steps, handrails and an accessible seating area are to be installed over the coming months.

To make the best use of funds, the seating will be retrofitted into the existing building over the amenities block.

“Sport has always been an important part of community life in Gloucester,” said Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell. “We are pleased to be able to deliver on an important project which will extend the use of the park facilities, particularly given that it has been on the community’s radar for a long time.”

The grandstand seating will benefit both sporting and community events.

Delays caused by the pandemic which have affected the construction industry have impacted on the timing of the project. The tender process is now underway and Council expects to select an appropriate contractor soon, with the project due for completion in April.

The project is possible thanks to $655,500 from round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities grants.

There’s also exciting news for netball fans. After delays due to COVID, Council’s contractor has started work to resurface the aged and cracking netball courts at the Nancy Smith Netball Complex.

There is a 28-day curing period for the asphalt to set and then the courts will be sealed, marked and new posts and rings installed.

This project is funded through a grant of $300,000 from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
