The Tasmanian Government is delivering up to six return services each week between Melbourne (Essendon) and King Island from October 2026 through to the end of April 2027, as part of a partnership with Sharp Airlines.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Roger Jaensch, said the additional capacity will help restore a vital service following Rex Airlines’ withdrawal from the Melbourne–Burnie–King Island route earlier this year.
“King Island is one of Tasmania’s most unique and valued destinations, and we know how important reliable air access is for locals, businesses and visitors,” Minister Jaensch said.
“We also understand the withdrawal of services earlier this year created challenges for the community, which is why our Government has worked with Sharp Airlines to deliver a schedule that reflects passenger demand and seasonal travel patterns.
The new services will provide increased capacity during periods of higher demand, including key events and holiday periods, while allowing flexibility to respond to demand as required.
“As part of our Strong Plan 2030 for Tasmania’s Future we are backing regional communities and supporting the services that help Tasmanians live, work and travel across the State.”
