Boosting Social Housing In Mitchell Shire

VIC Premier

More Victorians will have a place to call home thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s social housing investment in Mitchell Shire.

Minister for Housing Danny Pearson today visited the site of a newly constructed social housing property in Seymour – part of more than $26 million invested in projects in Seymour and Wallan to build 71 new homes for those who need them most.

This investment in social housing projects in the region is part of the Labor Government’s landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.

Included in the projects under construction is a $5.5 million, 16-home development in Seymour that is being built in partnership with the Haven Foundation.

These homes are being delivered for Victorians living with mental illness, ensuring provision of adequate housing – one of the recommendations in the final report of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

Social housing projects in the Mitchell Shire are also expected to create at least 230 local jobs for builders, electricians, plumbers and other tradespeople.

The developments will provide safe, stable and secure housing for Victorians – including people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, older women, Aboriginal Victorians and people with a disability or mental illness – so they can live their best life.

The houses are part of a record investment in social and affordable housing by the Labor Government. The landmark Big Housing Build – the largest single investment in social and affordable housing in Australia’s history – is delivering more than 12,000 new homes and creating an average of 10,000 jobs per year over the next four years.

The Big Housing Build is investing $1.25 billion in regional areas – including a minimum investment guarantee of $25 million that has already been met for Mitchell Shire – ensuring the economic and social benefits are felt in communities across the state.

As stated by Minister for Housing Danny Pearson

“Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and these new developments provide just that, allowing people to live a life of stability.”

“The social housing developments across Mitchell Shire are proof of our government’s commitment to tackling homelessness and investing in real and tangible solutions.”

As stated by Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes

“This investment will make a real difference, providing people with the safety and security of social and affordable housing and helping build a strong local community.”
