Brave new world for Coffs Harbour’s Brelsford Park

Coffs Harbour City

The shovels are poised to swing in a major upgrade of Brelsford Park in the heart of Coffs Harbour.

A masterplan has been developed for the park which is already popular with youth using the skate facilities and playground, while the fields are a magnet for recreational activities.

The wide grassed expanse also serves as an open-air venue for events like the community Christmas carols.

City of Coffs Harbour is thrilled to announce the imminent start of Stage 1 of a major enhancement of the precinct.

“Brelsford Park has quite rightly been called one of Coffs Harbour’s jewels in the crown,” City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Cr Paul Amos said.

“It has massive potential to become a fantastic community and tourism asset that also helps link the city centre with the foreshores.”

Headline features of the Stage 1 upgrade include a welcoming paved entrance to the park and construction of a community event space including a small stage and amphitheatre.

“Through this masterplan, the park will become a multi-faceted green lung that will offer tranquil parkland areas and spaces for fun, inclusive events and cultural activities for our growing community,” City of Coffs Harbour City Infrastructure Director Andrew Beswick said.

Many of the great cities of the world have developed multi-purpose ‘downtown’ green spaces, from New York’s Central Park to Sydney’s Hyde Park.

“City of Coffs Harbour has ambitious plans to develop Brelsford Park into a welcoming and versatile community space that can be enjoyed by all,” Mayor Amos said.

Other features of the Stage 1 works include:

· Mobile kiosk location

· Additional public amenities

· Pathway connections

· Picnic facilities

· Seating and shelters

· Lighting and power

· Shade tree planting; and

· Drainage improvements.

The improvements will be funded by a $4,997,620 grant from the Australian and NSW governments.

The works – awarded to the Van Mal Group Pty Ltd – are due to start on Monday, 5 February, and are scheduled for completion early in the new financial year.

The playground and skatepark will remain open throughout the construction period.
