Break and enter accused attempts escape on ride-on mower at Dapto, NSW

A man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a home, stealing a car and dragging a man in Dapto yesterday.

Police have been told about 6.50am (Wednesday 9 December 2020), a 30-year-old man threw a brick into the window of a home on Semillon Place, Dapto, before entering the home and stealing a Ford Festiva.

A male neighbour attempted to stop the man by holding on to the vehicle, and was dragged for about 40m, before the car crashed into a trailer.

The neighbour was treated at the scene for minor injuries before being taken to a medical centre for assessment. The man fled the scene on foot.

A crime scene was established on Semillon Place and detectives from Lake Illawarra Police District commenced inquiries.

A short time later, the man allegedly broke into a second home on Cormack Street, Dapto, and attempted to drive off on a ride-on lawn mower, before fleeing on foot.

He was arrested on Mawarra Avenue before being taken to hospital for observation after allegedly ingesting an unknown substance.

The man has now been released into police custody and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he’s been charged with aggravated break and enter, aggravated break and enter with intent, injuries by furious driving, drive manner dangerous, steal motor vehicle, and possess house-breaking implements.

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 10 December 2020).
