Breeding bitterns, protected platypuses and free-moving fish

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

It’s all in a year’s work for the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH).

Take a journey through the rivers, wetlands and floodplains of the Murray-Darling Basin in Australia’s east, a vast area of Australia stretching across 1 million square kilometres – the size of France and Spain together.

Home to more than 2.4 million people including from over 50 First Nations, the Basin supports unique habitats that are critical to the survival of plants, animals, people and the river system as a whole.

See how the CEWH, Dr Simon Banks and team have worked with partners to get water for the environment to where it’s needed, at the right times, for environmental benefits.
