Brooklyn and Altona North next in line to become Better Places

Hobsons Bay City Council’s Better Places program is heading to Brooklyn and Altona North and we are asking the community to share what they love, what they would change and what ideas they have for the two suburbs.

Following extensive partnerships with the communities of Laverton, Spotswood and South Kingsville, Council is bringing its place-based approach to planning to the northern end of the municipality and is keen to hear from the community about:

  • local environment and amenity
  • transport and connectivity
  • public places and spaces
  • community facilities and services
  • shops, businesses and employment
  • housing, neighbourhood character and development

The first round of consultation will focus on what the community feels makes Brooklyn and Altona North special, what they think needs to change to make the suburbs even better and big ideas for the future.

Feedback will be used to create a ‘place guide’ for Brooklyn and Altona North, which will be used to guide and prioritise planning and projects in future.

To have your say, visit https://participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/betterplaces-brooklyn-and-altona-north by Wednesday 8 December. Surveys have also been sent to all households.

Council developed the Better Places program to take a more place-based approach to planning by considering overall ‘places’ and how they look, feel and work together rather than just individual ‘pieces’.

Better Places also aims to more actively involve the community in the process of shaping the place they live in, helping to create a vision that not only reflects their values and priorities, but also provides practical ideas and clear steps towards turning the vision into a reality in the future.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Mayor and Cherry Lake Ward Councillor Daria Kellander

“I am excited to see the Better Places model come to Brooklyn and Altona North and know the community will have some great ideas for the future direction of these two suburbs. It might be ideas for public spaces and how they would like to see those designed and built in future, or ways we can improve transport and connectivity.

“We want to hear it all so that we can create a vision that truly reflects those that live, work and play in Brooklyn and Altona North.”

Quotes attributable to Cherry Lake Ward Councillor Tony Briffa

“Altona North and Brooklyn are wonderfully passionate and diverse communities and it’s important the council engages with them to hear their ideas and aspirations for the future of their neighbourhoods. These areas have been changing for a number of years and this project is a great opportunity to help shape the future. Needless to say, we will also continue to work with various agencies to resolve air quality, traffic, public transport and amenity issues.

“I encourage residents in Altona North and Brooklyn to complete the survey being sent to all households or jump onto the Participate Hobsons Bay website and tell us your ideas.”
