Schools in the bush are set to receive enhanced digital connectivity that supports contemporary learning through the Territory Labor Government’s investment in new telecommunication technologies.

Budget 2023 provides $4 million for telecommunications upgrades that will improve digital connectivity in some of our most remote areas.

The four year program is a strong investment in the Territory’s future leaders, providing access to new and improved digital technologies for our remote and regional schools.

A mixture of fibre, wireless and satellite technologies will be utilised, including new low earth orbital satellites able to achieve high speed connectivity in even the most remote locations without the significant costs of trenching traditional fibre optic cables to each remote community.

Digital technology is critical to giving all Territory kids the best learning outcomes to meet their aspirations and we know this investment will open a world of new opportunities for our youth.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education, Eva Lawler:

“Every child, no matter how remote they live, deserves the best possible access to education.

“This budget commitment will see improved technology that provides better, faster access for children in our remote and regional schools.

“It will also assist our teachers, school leaders and support staff in connecting, engaging, and educating the Territory’s future leaders”.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Corporate and Digital Development, Ngaree Ah Kit:

“This is an exciting opportunity to embrace new technology to provide our most remote, and often most disadvantaged, children with access to valuable learning tools and contribute to closing the gap.

“As many remote communities do not have access to reliable telecommunications facilities, these upgrades will deliver connectivity and capability in the classroom not seen before in some of our most remote locations.

“Equal opportunity in access to education is fundamental to addressing Aboriginal disadvantage.”
