Builders chosen for Kalgoorlie fire station upgrades

  • WA builders awarded tender for $1.9 million upgrade of Kalgoorlie Career and Fire Rescue Station
  • Project will allow additional career firefighters to be on station 24/7
  • $1.3 million expansion of Kalgoorlie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service headquarters also expected to be completed by mid-December

Construction work will soon start on a $1.9 million upgrade of Kalgoorlie Career and Fire Rescue Station, after the Cook Government recently awarded the project contract to Western Australian builders HS Hyde and Son.

Finding an experienced builder to undertake the onsite works represents an important milestone for the project, which will ensure Kalgoorlie’s career firefighters have access to upgraded facilities to train for and respond to hazards.

With firefighter wellbeing and safety the centrepiece of its design, upgrades to the Boulder Road site include building two post-incident hygiene showers, new training and gym facilities, a refurbished kitchen, additional storage and study areas.

Delivering on a 2021 State Election commitment to deploy additional career firefighters to the frontline of regional WA, the redevelopment will accommodate a greater number of personnel on shift at all times.

Onsite works are expected to begin in a matter of weeks, with an estimated completion date of May 2024.

Temporary facilities, such as a transportable gym, have been organised by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to minimise the impact of the project on the day-to-day running of the station.

An expansion of Kalgoorlie Volunteer Fire and Rescue’s headquarters on Hare Street is also underway and expected to be completed by mid-December this year.

The $1.3 million project -awarded to Kalgoorlie builders DJ McGinty and Co – will deliver an additional appliance bay, new toilets, an office, a dedicated breathing apparatus hygiene sink and new changing facilities.

As stated by Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson:

“Today’s announcement represents the delivery of a major election commitment for the people of Kalgoorlie.

“It’s great to have a Western Australian contractor engaged to complete these upgrades to the career station, and a local Goldfields contractor working on the volunteer headquarters.

“Importantly, the upgrades to Kalgoorlie Career and Fire Rescue Station mean DFES can boost staffing ratios and increase the number of personnel on shift who are available to respond to emergencies 24/7.”

As stated by Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:

“I’m thrilled to see these vital upgrades about to start at theKalgoorlie Career Fire and Rescue Station and the ongoing work at the Kalgoorlie Volunteer Fire and Rescue headquarters.

“Our firefighters are localheroes andkeeping them safe with the best equipment and facilities is our number one priority.

“These new facilities will allowthemto maintain their exemplary standard of emergency response and keep the Goldfields community safe.”
