The Allan and Albanese Labor Governments are building more homes for Victorians, creating a blueprint for the long‑term renewal of the Banksia Gardens neighbourhood in Broadmeadows.
The second project to be delivered in Victoria as part of the Albanese Government’s Social Housing Accelerator program, an investment of more than $80 million through the Accelerator and the Allan Labor Government’s Big Housing Build will deliver 120 new social homes for those who need them most.
Built on vacant land facing Coleraine Street, the new homes will be modern, comfortable and energy‑efficient – located close to shops, transport, schools and services in the heart of Broadmeadows.
The ground floor of the new housing development will include new facilities to support both future residents and those who already live on the Banksia Gardens estate, as well as a new cycling and pedestrian link to connect the centre of Banksia Gardens to Coleraine Street with a nearby education precinct.
Construction of new homes will get underway next year, and will create more than 700 local jobs.
In addition to the new homes, the Allan Labor Government is creating a masterplan for the long‑term renewal and improvements for the entire Banksia Gardens neighbourhood – making sure its homes, amenity and facilities remain fit‑for‑purpose for many years to come.
The Social Housing Accelerator announced in June by the Albanese Government invests more than $496 million for Victoria alone to add 769 social homes to the state’s existing social housing stock.
The Banksia Gardens redevelopment builds on the first Victorian Accelerator project, which will rebuild the Carlton public housing towers – replacing the 196 outdated, uninhabitable dwellings with 231 modern, energy efficient homes for Victorians, increasing housing on the site by at least 10 per cent.
The Allan Labor Government is on track to deliver more than 12,000 much‑needed new social and affordable homes track through the Big Housing Build and create more than 40,000 jobs in construction.
