Building our way to recovery

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering our plan to rebuild a stronger Tasmania, and the recent building approvals data is yet again clear evidence that our plan is working.

ABS data released today shows that building approvals in Tasmania grew 18.8 per cent in September, exceeding the national growth rate of 15.4 per cent.

At the same time, the latest home lending figures show the number of loans for the purchase or construction of new dwellings has increased by 21.9 per cent in September and new home loans are 35.5 per cent higher than September last year.

Tasmania was the first state to sign onto HomeBuilder, we were the first state to pass associated legislation, and we were the first state to improve our approval and payment processes making it easier to gain finance.

Our swift action is clearly helping to drive these strong results.

The Government has a clear plan to rebuild a stronger Tasmania, which includes our $3.1 billion Construction Blitz supporting the development of 2,300 new homes and underpinning 15,000 jobs.

The best way to grow our economy and create jobs is to support business confidence, and that is what we are doing.

The upcoming State Budget will provide the economic platform our State needs to create more jobs, and to provide the certainty and confidence our community needs.
