The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to the Tasmanian building and construction industry and has today signed the latest Industry Skills Compact.
Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Felix Ellis, said the Compact and Action Plan signalled the industry’s firm commitment to work with the Government for a stronger future.
“We are proud to sign our seventh industry compact with the building and construction industry which is all about maximising the benefits of a strong skills and training system for employers and employees,” Minister Ellis said.
“The Building and Construction Skills Compact is a brand new collaborative partnership that will improve skills, training and workforce development for the entire industry.
“The Government’s $10 million High-Vis Army commitment is already seeing positive impacts and we are working hard to make sure industry can access the workforce they need for the incredible pipeline of works we have right across Tasmania, especially with some of the major projects we have coming up.
“With more than 20,000 Tasmanians employed in the building and construction sector, this industry is crucial in our economy.”
Minister Ellis said the Industry Skills Compacts are helping to ensure there is a focus on industry-led workforce development and fit-for-purpose training in Tasmania across a range of industries.
“Our vision is for a training and workforce development system that puts the learner at the centre. Our system must be accessible and job-focussed, supporting stronger pathways to employment and skills for Tasmanians,” Minister Ellis said.
Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, said a vibrant building industry was critically important as the Rockliff Liberal Government embarks on the most ambitious social and affordable housing program in the State’s history to deliver 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.
“The Government recognises the housing challenges facing Tasmanians and we know that increasing the supply of homes is at the forefront of addressing them.
“With 860 new social housing, supported accommodation and crisis accommodation projects in the Homes Tasmania construction pipeline as at 30 September 2023, our workforce development is a vital part of getting more quality homes built, faster,” Minister Street said.
