Burnie youths charged with car burglaries across north-west coast

Burnie CIB have charged two male youths with thirteen car burglaries across the North-West Coast last month.

In late October, police received reports of multiple car burglaries in the Parklands, Cooee, Somerset and Wynyard areas.

As part of the investigation, police executed a search warrant at a residence in Wynyard on 31 October where stolen property was located.

A 17-year-old male youth from Wynyard has been charged with:

  • Burglary x7
  • Stealing x5
  • Receiving stolen property x1
  • Assault a police officer x1
  • Multiple drug offences.

A 17-year-old male youth from Ulverstone will be proceeded against under the Youth Justice Act with:

  • Burglary x10
  • Stealing x10.

“In all thirteen of the car burglaries, the vehicles involved were left unlocked,” said 1/C Constable Joshua Wood.

“One of the stolen items recovered by police was an engagement ring worth $7,500. Other items stolen included wallets, electronic devices and loose coins.

“Thieves are often opportunistic and will take advantage of anyone who leaves their vehicle or belongings unlocked and unattended. I urge everyone to lock their property and never leave valuables unattended, these simple steps can prevent a vehicle from being a target for burglars.”
