Bushfire programs building resilient communities

Through the introduction of community-based bushfire management, the Timboon community will be taking a leading role in finding solutions to the issues and concerns about bushfire that affect the community members directly.

Bushfires in Victoria pose a real threat to lives, homes, jobs and the environment. Building resilience to emergencies as well as managing bushfire risk is an ongoing and shared responsibility – a partnership in which everyone has a role.

Through the introduction of community-based bushfire management, the Timboon community will be taking a leading role in finding solutions to the issues and concerns about bushfire that affect the community members directly.

The Timboon Community Bushfire Management Group was formed as part of the Safer Together program with participants recently attending a field trip around Timboon to assess some of the vegetation risks around the town. A number of sites were visited including the Timboon Colac Road, Timboon Nullawarre Road, Timboon Rail Trail, the communications towers and the Dawson Street/Escarpment area with local solutions being discussed.

The event was supported by Corangamite Shire Council, CFA, Landcare, Lions Club, Rail Trail Committee and the Timboon Community Action Group with several actions are already being initiated to assist with risk reduction.
