Bushfire survivors welcome leadership on climate

Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action

Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action has welcomed pushback from the Nationals Party room against Queensland Liberal National Party (LNP) Senator Matt Canavan’s claim that the Coalition’s net zero agreement is “dead in the water”.

President Jo Dodds thanked Nationals including Michael McCormack, Darren Chester and David Littleproud for their leadership on this serious issue for rural and regional Australia.

“We know the Nationals party room voted for Australia to go to net zero emissions by 2050,” Ms Dodds said.

“As Michael McCormack said, ‘when country people make a deal, a deal is a deal is a deal.’

“When we promise something, we stick to it.

“Climate damage is hurting communities in regional Australia, burning down homes and destroying livelihoods.

“The Nationals’ commitment to net zero was a welcome first step and we are really grateful for it. We need to take the opportunities to make deep emissions reductions this decade to protect our rural communities.

“We welcome more leadership in this space and will always give credit where it is due. We know there are so many opportunities for country Australians to prosper. We just need strong leaders to help us get on with it.”
