Business boost through Council’s development incentives

Townsville City Council has bolstered businesses across the city with more than $1.3 million in development incentives in the 2022/23 financial year, with the next series of businesses applying for incentives going to Council this month.

As an organisation, Council is dedicated to growing Townsville into the hub for modern industry. In the 2022/23 financial year, Council offered its City Activation and Jobs Growth Policy, designed to generate investment, community activities and employment opportunities, to 16 businesses.

Of those businesses, five received just more than $1.07 million in waived infrastructure charges, while the remaining 11 received almost $300,000 in fiscal grant funding.

Business Services and Finance Committee chairperson Margie Ryder said the incentives were created to attract investment, increase resident population and bolster industry development to leverage Townsville’s existing industries.

“Businesses and organisations tapped into Council’s development incentives for projects like community centres, residential units, not-for-profit offices, cocktail bars and the refurbishment of existing offices and hotels,” Cr Ryder said.

“We have also been able to work with major businesses like Wulguru Group and Telstra to ensure hundreds of employees are able to live and work in Townsville.

“This is really exciting for us as a Council as we work to grow Townsville.

“We are continuing our City Activation and Jobs Growth Policy, with further incentives available to Townsville businesses through the 2023/24 financial year. All the details are on our website, so jump online to find out more.”
