Business bootcamp supporting business owners to level up

Kempsey Shire Council

A training program is giving small business owners across the Macleay Valley a whole new view on how to grow, innovate and thrive in their spaces.

The Business Bootcamp is a 12-week workshop series designed for local small business owners to develop their skills and capacity in a fun and supportive environment.

Each week focused on a different topic, with practical and hands-on sessions. Topics included marketing, social media, finances and sustainability.

As the program draws to a close, all participants shared a mutual appreciation for all they have learned, but most of all, the connections they made with other small business owners over the course of the program.

One participant, Kit, is the business owner of Waves Campground at Crescent Head. He is passionate about creating a space for people to flourish in nature and provide jobs for local community members and visitors alike.

“There’s a reason that I’ve chosen to settle in the Macleay Valley and specifically within Kempsey Shire and follow through to citizenship within Kempsey. Because I love it,” Kit said.

“I love the area. I love our community. I’m really proud to be a part of that.”

One of the great benefits from the program for Kit has been connecting with likeminded people in the community.

“The networking was amazing. One business produces too many boxes and can’t recycle them quick enough. The next business can’t get a hold of boxes quick enough. It’s a great, simple networking opportunity, just right there.”

While there are still challenges in running a small business, participants were able to access support through a range of special guest speakers who attended different sessions.

“It’s great to put a face to the organisation and have a conversation that can actually tell us what support is available, how to access that support. And give us the best opportunities for continuing to grow our small businesses,” shared Kit.

Another participant, Donna, from local business Macleay Air, shared the importance of taking time to reflect.

“As a business owner, you get totally absorbed in everything that’s going on. It’s really hard to actually slow down and just think about the direction of the business, what you’re doing.”

“It’s really good to sit in the room with a bunch of likeminded people. Nobody’s there judging, everybody’s there to support one another, and everybody grows throughout the program. So, I would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about doing it.”

The Business Bootcamp was created and is delivered by local business owner Julie Humphris of Business Life Guide. The program is proudly funded by Kempsey Shire Council.
