Buy Local Policy delivering for Tasmanian businesses

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Building and Construction

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting Tasmanian businesses to thrive, hire more staff and invest into the Tasmanian economy.

The latest Government procurement statistics for the quarter ending 31 December 2018 show that our Buy Local Policy is working.

A total of 92.19% of contracts were awarded to Tasmanian businesses in the last quarter, with the total value of those contracts sitting at $68.54 million.

Pleasingly, the number of contracts awarded to Tasmanian businesses in the last quarter was 59.

The Government is committed to growing the number of Tasmanian businesses awarded government contracts to 90 per cent by 2022, and we continue to exceed this goal.

Our Buy Local Policy for Government procurement means the benefits to the wider community, such as job creation and social benefits, must be taken into account when decisions are made on awarding contracts.

The more we can do to help promote local spending the better it is for all Tasmanians, and by continuing to apply the local benefits test we help ensure our local businesses have the best chance of securing Government contracts and a strong financial future.
