Byron Shire Council is working with the operators of the Byron Farmers Market and the Community Market to manage their return to the Butler St Reserve as soon as possible.
The start of construction of the Byron Bay bypass meant the markets had to temporarily relocate from August this year.
The weekly Farmers market is currently being held at the Cavanbah Centre on Ewingsdale Rd, while the monthly Community Market is being held at Dening Park next to the Byron Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.
“We’re grateful for the time and diligence that the council staff have put into assisting us with our transition,” said Kate Hardman, manager of the Byron Community Markets.
“So far, we are enjoying our stay at the beachside location and we look forward to a successful trading summer.”
Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said staff, and contractors, will be working as fast as possible to get Butler St Reserve reopened.
“We know how important the markets are to our community, and to people in the Northern Rivers region and beyond, and getting them back to Butler St is a priority,” Mr Holloway said.
“Staff have been working with market operators for many months, preparing for the initial relocation and they are aware of the changes to the construction schedule and the impact this is having on our plans to reopen Butler St Reserve.
“Butler Street Reserve is the traditional home of the markets and we will continue to work closely with market managers to ensure the reserve is available for their return as soon as possible,” Mr Holloway said.
Despite the initial delays to stage one of the bypass construction due to protest action and the EPBC Act referral, the project remains on track for completion by late 2020.
