Byron Shire Flood Recovery Update 11 March

Flood-Palmwoods-road-reconstruction.jpg

A big shout out to the staff who have been working on the road network in the hinterland behind Mullumbimby this last week.

Thanks to their amazing efforts we’re expecting, that by tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) the majority of the road network will be open so people can get access to their properties.

This means that around 300 households who have been isolated since the floods began over a week ago will be able to get into Mullumbimby and beyond for supplies, support (and hugs) again.

All going well, only Englishes Bridge and one section of Huonbrook Road will remain closed.

A big thanks to everyone in the communities out there for your patience, knowledge and understanding. We’ve only been able to achieve what we have by working alongside each other.

We’re expecting to having contractors onsite at Englishes Bridge early next week to start work on a temporary access for residents.

We will not be putting out an update on the weekend and will report back on Monday, 14 March.

Don’t forget the Mullumbimby Flood Recovery Centre at the Civic Centre is open this weekend and there’s a lot of help and information available.

Reopening this road is our number one priority and thanks to the locals for their understanding. If it was easy it would have been reopened.

We’re continuing to work with ADF teams to clear the road into Huonbrook which has been impacted by significant landslides.

Survey control points are being established for slips at Huonbrook and Federal to monitor any potential ongoing movement.

Geotechnical test-drilling will start at Huonbrook next week and Council will secure drilling services to move on to Federal and other slips systematically.
