Call For Greater Safety Measures At Falls Creek Hotspot

Mayor Patricia White is calling on the State Government to improve safety near the Mortimer Road intersection on the Princes Highway at Falls Creek following the third vehicle accident in eight months.

The October long weekend crash is the latest in a series of serious incidents at the site, following a major accident in February, and a fatal collision involving a truck and a car in June that claimed two lives.

Cr White said the rise in accidents was likely due to motorists heading north on the Princes Highway and making right-hand turns into Mortimer Road to access Jervis Bay during construction of the flyover.

“I’m calling on the State Government to install additional signage and warning measures at this dangerous intersection to help prevent further accidents,” Cr White said.

“The flyover will ultimately make this area safer, but during construction, limited access to Jervis Bay Road has created a hazardous situation at the intersection, with vehicles travelling at 80km/h,” she said.

“When you have three serious crashes in eight months at the same location, it’s clear that urgent intervention is needed. Improving safety now could help prevent further injuries and save lives,” she said.

Falls Creek is located between South Nowra and Tomerong and is a key gateway to Jervis Bay and the south coast. Thousands of residents, workers and visitors travel through the area each week.

The Mayor urged Transport for NSW to investigate and implement a range of interim safety measures. This could include additional warning signage, variable message signs, reduced speed limits during construction and enhanced road markings to improve driver awareness and reduce the risk of further accidents.
