Call for submissions to expand the successful Supportive Landlord Model for people sleeping rough

  • Registration of Interest now open for Community Housing Organisations to partner with Cook Government in bolstering regional social housing and tenancy support for people sleeping rough
  • Builds on the success of ‘Supportive Landlord Model – Djuripiny Mia’, which has delivered 70 new social homes, accommodating more than 100 individuals into permanent housing to date

A Registration of Interest is now open for Community Housing Organisations to partner with the Cook Government to deliver more regional social housing for people sleeping rough.

Up to 100 regional social homes will be added either through spot purchasing or new builds, managed by Community Housing Organisations through a Supportive Landlord Model (SLM) approach, under a further $49 million commitment by the Cook Government.

Community Housing Organisations, including Aboriginal Controlled Community Housing Organisations, in Albany/Denmark, Broome, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, and Port Hedland are encouraged to register their interest.

The boost to regional social housing builds on the success of the ‘Supportive Landlord Model – Djuripiny Mia’, which assists complex tenancies in finding and sustaining long-term housing.

The model is being successfully piloted under a landmark partnership with Housing Choices to deliver 100 social homes across Perth, Peel, and Bunbury. Since its inception, the program has delivered 70 social homes, and is accommodating more than 100 people who were experiencing chronic rough sleeping.

The Regional SLM Registration of Interest will help the State Government gauge interest from Community Housing Organisations to expand the model to more regions.

Community Housing Organisations will contribute to the planning of acquiring suitable properties and provide ongoing property and tenancy management.

As stated by Housing and Homelessness Minister John Carey:

“We know that providing a home to the most vulnerable members of our community – who may be experiencing rough sleeping – can be transformational for their lives.

“This is why the Cook Government is investing a record $2.6 billion in social housing and homelessness measures, including delivering around 4,000 social dwellings, and refurbishments to thousands more.

“Our Government is investing $225 million in homelessness initiatives this year alone including funding 130 services across Western Australia.

“In line with the Housing First Approach, the Cook Government is investing in a range of homeless accommodation options including the Supportive Landlord Model – Djuripiny Mia, which will provide 100 homes for rough sleepers through a Supportive Landlord Model.

“Djuripiny Mia is already supporting more than 100 people across more than 70 properties.

“This Registration of Interest for the Regional Supported Landlord Model is an important step in helping to deliver more social housing to regional Western Australia.”
