Calls for community road name submissions to build Road Name Bank

Snowy Monaro Regional Council is seeking input for the creation of a Road Name Bank to accommodate the increasing number of proposed subdivisions in the region. This initiative aims to streamline the road naming process, enhance community engagement, and foster a sense of identity unique to the Snowy Monaro.

Our region is witnessing a surge in proposed subdivisions, with many new roads in need of names over the next five to ten years, including a significant number within the next 12 months.

In response to this growth, Snowy Monaro Regional Council seeks to establish a Road Name Bank through community contributions to fulfil two vital objectives:

  1. Enriching the region’s identity by involving the community in suggesting relevant and distinctive road names, honouring the towns, villages, and localities that comprise the Snowy Monaro.
  2. Enhancing efficiency in road naming procedures by proactively conducting parts of the process in bulk, reducing turnaround times for development applications and subdivision certifications.

To expedite the road naming process, Snowy Monaro Regional Council aims to create a Road Name Bank, with our community nominating locally relevant and meaningful names for future roads in their area. Upon the Bank’s approval and finalisation, the process for each road name proposal will be quick and simple.

The more we hear from the community – in terms of names suggested, and feedback provided on these suggestions – during this consultation, the more representative and widely accepted these names will be when adopted.

This is particularly important, with this consultation putting out a single upfront call for names across the Snowy Monaro – something not done before – while creating a streamlined process for each individual road naming proposal. Once approved, any road names proposed outside of the Bank will continue to require case-by-case public consultation.

Community members are encouraged to submit their road name suggestions online at the link below. The Your Say page outlines how to make a good nomination that will make it into the Road Name Bank. The deadline for submissions is 11.59pm Sunday 3 September 2023. Submissions can be made:
