Camden Council is calling on the State and Federal Governments to urgently invest in critical infrastructure, following new data that reveals Camden is the fastest-growing area in NSW.
Analysis published by The Sydney Morning Herald shows Camden’s population increased by 224 per cent between 2001 and 2025, which makes it the largest increase of any NSW local government area. Camden’s current population sits at more than 147,000 and Council’s own forecasts warn this growth is far from over, with more than 256,000 people expected to call Camden home by 2046. That’s an increase of almost 75 per cent in the next 20 years alone.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the figures reinforced the fact that the region was growing at an extraordinary rate and infrastructure investment needed to catch up.
“We’ve been saying it for a really long time now – we’re growing quickly and our roads, public transport, schools, healthcare and other essential infrastructure have not kept pace,” she said.
“Council has worked hard to deliver the homes that Sydney and NSW desperately need. But our essential infrastructure is already under significant pressure and our community is feeling the effects.
“Camden residents shouldn’t have to accept longer commutes, congested roads, limited public transport and growing pressure on essential services. Camden needs a fair share of government investment in the infrastructure our existing residents need today, as well as the infrastructure required to support the more than 100,000 additional people expected to call Camden home over the coming decades.
“Council can’t do it alone. We need committed partnerships with all levels of government to be able to deliver what our community needs and deserves.”
Through its The Time Is Now advocacy campaign, Council is calling for investment in major transport, road, health and education infrastructure to support the region’s rapid growth. Council is advocating for improved public transport connections, major road upgrades, additional healthcare capacity, new and expanded schools, and investment in local employment and supporting infrastructure.
