“I am pleased to announce that the City of Canada Bay has been successful in securing grant funding from the NSW Government for the delivery of our Drummoyne Shared Spaces project,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.
“This funding from the NSW Government’s Your High Street program will allow the community’s vision for Drummoyne to come to life and bring new life to the town centre as our local business precinct bounces back from COVID-19.”
The new grant funding will contribute an additional $1 million to deliver outcomes from the Victoria Road Urban Design Review alongside a $2M commitment from the City of Canada Bay.
“This landmark $3M project will be a shining example of local government working in collaboration with residents, business and the NSW government to deliver much needed local public space for our community.”
“The local community in Drummoyne has long been calling for more public space, better local amenity and a revitalised business district – and with this support from the NSW Government we will now be able to build and deliver a vision for these sites.”
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said it was great to see the local community being able to enjoy their Streets as Shared Spaces project in Drummoyne.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased the demand for more public spaces – and easy, safe access to them,” Mr Stokes said.
“Whether it’s new cycle lanes, pedestrian-only streets or wider footpaths, we’re committed to working with councils and communities right across the state to fund projects that can make life better for everyone.”
After extensive community consultation and a Summer series of pop-up events and community markets, the pilot of two shared public spaces in Drummoyne was made permanent by the City of Canada Bay at the Council’s March meeting.
The closures include a small section of Formosa Street at Lyons Road, and a section of Church Street which has been revised to one-way access near Victoria Road.
These streets were identified as pilot sites during Council’s Victoria Road Urban Design Review which undertook extensive consultation with the local community to set priorities for the revitalisation of the area.
The NSW Government’s state-wide Your High Street program has been rolled out to promote permanent improvement projects in local government areas. The program will boost high street businesses, local economies and public wellbeing in response to COVID-19.
“The next step for this project will be to collaborate with the local residents and business community to build and deliver a common vision for these two new public spaces,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
