ACT Greens spokesperson for Public Service Andrew Braddock has welcomed the resignation of Ms Kathy Leigh as Head of Service, saying it presents an opportunity to put merit back at the heart of public service leadership.
“I welcome the resignation of Ms Kathy Leigh as Head of Service and believe this is an opportunity to restore public confidence in the independence, professionalism, and performance of the ACT Public Service,” stated Andrew Braddock.
“The next Head of Service must be selected on merit and must be the best person for the job.”
“The ACT Head of Service is a critical role. It demands an exceptional leader with the experience, integrity and capability to navigate the ACT’s challenges and deliver outcomes for the Canberra community.”
“Under the current rules, this senior position is simply a captain’s pick. The only performance criteria for the role is whether the individual has the continuing confidence of the Chief Minister”, stated Andrew Braddock.
“The ACT needs better during these challenging times.”
“With a Labor government that has been in power for almost 25 years, we need a fiercely independent, non-partisan and competently led public service. We can’t risk a public service that is comfortable and habituated with one party.”
