Canberra hosts National NAIDOC Awards 2019

On Saturday evening Canberra will host the 2019 National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony. The Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their communities and beyond.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith said hosting the 2019 awards is a great opportunity for Canberra to showcase local Ngunnawal culture and our national institutions’ important roles in protecting and exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait histories, languages and cultures.

“There are hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations across Australia, with distinctive cultures, beliefs and languages. These awards are a chance for us to show the entire country the richness and diversity of Aboriginal culture in Canberra and our surrounding region.”

Minister Stephen-Smith believes hosting the national awards will encourage visitors and locals to learn more about Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

“On a local level, there’s so much to see and do. For example, places like Namadji and Mount Majura are significant sites in telling the story of the Ngunnawal people and the Burunju Aboriginal Art Gallery displays artwork by local Aboriginal artists and holds workshops and events throughout the year.

“Canberra is also home to our national cultural institutions, offering a chance to learn more about our shared history and journey towards Reconciliation.

“As the home of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, Canberra is the place where people come to reconnect with their own histories and cultures, and where languages are being revived.

“I’m really excited that Canberra is hosting the awards this year and encourage all Canberrans to get involved in the many events and activities happening throughout NAIDOC Week.”
