Canberra’s sporting community boosted by $2m

More than 70 local sporting and recreation organisations across Canberra will receive funding for operations, facility upgrades and equipment as part of the latest round of the ACT Government Sport and Recreation Grants Program.

The ACT Government’s Sport and Recreation Grants assist local Canberra organisations and clubs to better support the community to interact and participate in physical activities.

The ACT has the highest participation rates in the country and this government is committed to making sure that every has a chance to get active.

The Sport and Recreation Grants will continue to assist local Canberra clubs to enhance their facilities and programs and be more inclusive, including for women and girls.

Included in this funding round is support for an additional five projects within the Women’s Sport and Recreation Participation and Leadership Program, including $4,600 for the Canberra Royals Rugby Union Club to access female-specific training equipment and $5,500 to the YMCA for a female sailing program.

Congratulations to all the organisations that have achieve 40 per cent representation of women on their boards. Of the 28 peak sporting bodies triennially funded through the ACT Government’s Sport and Recreation Grants Program, 24 have now reached the target or higher.

Canberra is an active city and it’s important that we support the community to live healthy, active and inclusive lifestyles.

Other organisations receiving funding through the Sport and Recreation Grants Program include:

  • Yarralumla and Southlands Tennis Clubs for the conversion of tennis court lighting to energy efficient LED lighting ($30,000).
  • The Scout Association ACT branch for upgrades to current administrative systems to provide benefits for participants and the large network of volunteers ($10,000).
  • ACT Billiards and Snooker Association for the introduction of a youth-based program aimed at increasing participation ($1,020).
  • Canberra Netball Association for additional storage at Lyneham ($6,800).
  • Boomunulla Raiders Rugby League Football Club ACT for the upgrade of equipment to support the club ($1,200).
