Cannabis Seizure – Groote Eylandt

Northern Territory Police Dog Operations Unit conducted screening of passengers and luggage arriving on a commercial flight in Alyangula yesterday.

During this screening, a less than commercial quantity of cannabis was located heavily wrapped and hidden in a bag of tools.

A 23-year-old Fannie Bay man, who arrived on Groote Eylandt as a contractor, has been issued with a notice to appear in court at a later date in relation to the possession of cannabis.

Officer in Charge of Alyangula Police Station, Senior Sergeant Tanya Woodcock said, “Police in Alyangula have a Zero Tolerance approach in relation to drug offences on Groote Eylandt.”

“Residents and contractors travelling on flights into Groote Eylandt are reminded that NT Police drug detection dogs conduct regular screening of passengers and luggage.”
