Car thief caught in Preston

Police have arrested a woman following the alleged theft of a car in Preston this morning.

Police were called to Peck Avenue, Strathmore following reports of suspicious activity at a house about 9.30am.

Upon police arrival, a male and female drove off in an alleged stolen white Hilux ute and were last seen travelling through Strathmore, Pascoe Vale and Coburg streets.

Shortly after, police believe the same ute rammed a garage door into a block of flats on Muchell Grove in Coburg and gained entry to the garage.

Police and dog squad members were hot on their heels and located a 21-year-old woman inside the flats.

The woman was arrested and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Investigators are yet to speak with the male driver of the car and urge him to come forward.
